Americans’ views of the economy improved in May after five straight months of declines sent consumer confidence to the lowest level since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, largely driven by anxiety over the impact of President Donald Trump’s tariffs.

The Conference Board’s consumer confidence index for May came in on the lower end of the recent range, but notched its highest monthly increase in four years. The rebound was especially strong after the U.S. and China reached a temporary deal to lower mutual tariffs.
