No team wants to do what they have done with left-hander Jordan Montgomery, who was pushed into a bullpen role on Sunday. Montgomery is owed $22.5 million this season, the second-highest salary of anyone on the roster, and yet he will be opening the year in a long relief role.
Montgomery was part of the 2023 World Series-winning Texas Rangers after he was traded from the St. Louis Cardinals in July of that season. Coincidentally, he pitched against the Diamondbacks in Game 2 of the World Series, giving up a 9-1 loss.
Two days before Opening Day, D-backs left-hander Jordan Montgomery told reporters on Tuesday that he will undergo Tommy John surgery next week. Last year with Arizona, Montgomery went 8-7 with a 6.23 ERA over 25 games (21 starts).
