The rebate, marking the third consecutive year of such refunds, aims to return surplus funds directly to taxpayers.

The Georgia State Senate passed several tax measures this week, including a bill lowering state income tax that received significant pushback from state Democrats. House Bill 111 would lower this year’s flat state income tax rate from 5.

House Bill 112 would, if signed by Gov. Brian Kemp, provide Georgians who filed tax returns for 2023 and 2024 a $250 to $500 tax credit, with the amount dependent on filing status for residents. During the vote, which finished at 12:20 p.m., the Georgia Senate passed the tax credit 32 to 20.

The Internal Revenue Service has been urging taxpayers to file their 2021 taxes before April 15 in order to claim any tax refunds they missed.

Some taxpayers may still be eligible to receive a pandemic-era stimulus check. A recovery rebate credit worth up to $1,400 was sent to a million taxpayers who qualified, the IRS announced in December.
