The candidates are rookie Tyler Shough and holdovers Jake Haener and Spencer Rattler. Meeting with reporters on Saturday, coach Kellen Moore was asked whether he views Shough as the starting quarterback.

Haener's lone start in Week 15 against the Washington Commanders was a disaster, to the point he got benched at halftime in favor of Rattler. The 26-year-old went 4-of-10 with 49 yards, no touchdowns and one interception prior to being replaced.

The Saints won't rush Shough. They have Spencer Rattler and Jake Haener, two other young QBs who have already started games in the NFL. But when Shough is ready, the Saints will count on him to take them into a new era. As of Carr's retirement, Shough is 25 years old. He'll turn 26 on September 28.
