French lawmakers voted to oust Prime Minister François Bayrou Monday, plunging the country into a new political crisis and leaving it without a government at a time of increasing economic strain and geopolitical tensions.

In a last-ditch effort to save his job before the vote, Bayrou warned that France is risking its future and its influence by racking up trillions in state debts that are “submerging us,” pleading for belt-tightening.

French Prime Minister François Bayrou lost a confidence vote in parliament on Monday, plunging the euro zone's second-largest economy deeper into a political crisis. Bayrou, as expected, lost the confidence vote, with 364 votes against him and 194 in his favour.
