ATLANTA — A rare winter storm swept across the northern Gulf Coast, leaving a fresh blanket of snow visible from space. Satellite imagery from January 22 highlights the snowpack in white, with darker areas to the north indicating regions that missed the snowfall.
A major storm spread heavy snow, sleet and freezing rain across the southern United States on Wednesday, breaking snow records and treating the region to unaccustomed perils and wintertime joy.
Freezing rain will lead to icy conditions, with a tenth up to a third inch of ice expected. The best chance for significant icing will occur across north Georgia, the Midlands of South Carolina up toward the Piedmont of North Carolina.
