Thursday's services capped six days of remembrance for Carter, who died on Dec. 29 at the age of 100. Following the honors in Washington, it was his wish to be buried in his hometown of Plains, next to his beloved wife of 77 years, Rosalynn Carter.

“After Friday we are just going to start settling back down and getting back to some type of normal,” said Lynton Earl Godwin, who is known around town as “Boze” and served as the mayor of Plains for 38 years until he retired last January. “The town has been anticipating this, and President Carter was anticipating it also.”

In the town of Plains, Georgia, President Jimmy Carter was affectionally referred to as “Mr. Jimmy.” Everybody in the tiny town was related to or knew him personally. Never before has a president devoted so much of himself to his hometown both before and after his presidency.
