Dangerous below-freezing temperatures with even colder wind chills were also expected to last over much of the week in the region. Authorities say three people have died in the cold weather.

Sun-soaked Florida and other parts of the South appear to have shattered snowfall records in what many are calling a once-in-a-lifetime chance to witness sandy snowscapes on beaches, of all places.

Cities along the Interstate 10 corridor only experience frozen precipitation a few times during a generation. The last measurable snowfall in Houston occurred on February 15, 2021.

The snowstorm currently lashing the Gulf Coast is being described as a once in a generation weather event, the National Weather Service said Monday.

Snow totals in Louisiana have broken records. Parts of Florida, Texas and Georgia have also accumulated several inches of snow.

Prior to that, the Milton Experimental Station recorded a historic snowfall 71 years ago; when Santa Rosa County set Florida's all-time 24-hour snowfall record with 4 inches, on March 6, 1954.
