More than 700 marines have been mobilised to respond to the protests in Los Angeles, and the troops will join the thousands of National Guard members who were activated by US President Donald Trump over the weekend without the consent of California’s governor or LA’s mayor.

Marines were seen standing guard outside a federal building in Los Angeles on Friday as they started to replace National Guard members at some posts after protests erupted last week over immigration raids and President Donald Trump deployed the troops to the city.

On Friday, Marines started to replace Guard members protecting the federal building west of downtown, so the Guard soldiers can be assigned to protect law enforcement officers on raids, the commander in charge of 4,700 troops deployed to the LA protests said.

Authorities swept in with flash-bangs and tear gas grenades to disperse hundreds of protesters in Los Angeles.
