Early weather and climate indications have forecasters worried that this year's Atlantic hurricane season will have similarities to the 2024 season, which was one of the most devastating and costliest on record.

On Monday afternoon, at 1 p.m. National Hurricane Center issued a SPECIAL Tropical Weather Outlook for an area of rotation in the subtropical Atlantic.

Still, March systems are "quite rare," according to Phil Klotzbach, a hurricane researcher at Colorado State University. Klotzbach said the only tropical cyclone ever recorded over the Atlantic in March was a Category 2 hurricane that hit the Leeward Islands and Caribbean in 1908.
