Maine men's ice hockey secured its first Hockey East championship since 2004 by defeating UConn on Friday, 5-2 at the TD Garden.
Six teams will represent Hockey East in the 16-team national tournament, an eye-popping number. Joining Maine and UConn will be BC, BU, Providence and UMass. The field will be unveiled Sunday (3 p.m.) on ESPNU.
Officially it’s the Hockey East championship, but during the league’s four decades it might as well have been called the Bay State Invitational. Year in, year out there has been at least one and usually two Massachusetts sextets playing for the trophy at TD Garden.
