VJ Day, also known as Victory in the Pacific Day, or VP Day, falls this year on Friday August 15. The allied victory will be celebrated across the UK. In the US, VJ day is celebrated on September 2, the date on which the surrender document was signed, officially ending the war.

About 100 people have gathered for a wreath-laying service to mark the 80th anniversary of Victory over Japan Day (VJ Day). VJ day honours the conflict in the far east before World War Two ended, when atomic bombs fell on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, leading to Japan's surrender on 15 August 1945.

Coun Josie Pritchard, the council’s armed forces champion, said: “On VJ Day, we reflect on the heavy price paid by so many in the pursuit of the freedom that we enjoy today. "We encourage our community to come together to remember those who fought in the Far East.
