We subscribed to the Chicago Tribune -- Sundays only -- several years ago. They keep the amount you're paying unclear by billing you at odd intervals and pointing out that you're paying for "special issues" on an irregular basis, so, you know, "you gotta account for that."

Chicago Public Media recently bought The Sun-Times. They also own WBEZ, our local public news radio station that also hosts NPR. They are a non-profit and I trust them more to not be slanted to interests of their owner. The Tribune's parent company, Tribune Publishing, is owned by Alden Global Capital, a hedge fund.

A "vulture capitalist" hedge fund bought the Tribune a while back. The hedge fund's MO is buying then gutting well-regarded regional newspapers, massively cutting staff, and milking subscriptions for 5 years or so hoping people don't notice the difference.
