Highland Park distillery was founded by Magnus Eunson, a butcher and church officer by day and illicit distiller and whisky smuggler by night. In 1798 he was caught illegally distilling whisky on the site. In 1826, nearly 30 years later, Highland Park received an official licence to distill whisky. [2]

Highland Park was called “the greatest all-rounder in the world of malt whisky” by the late, great, whisky evangelist Michael Jackson. In 1984, he was the only whisky ever to get a rating of 100 points from the buttons of the largest Scottish daily newspaper “The Scotsman”!

Magnus Eunson is credited for first distilling whisky on the site that would become Highland Park in the 1790's. Outwardly he was a respectable member of Orcadian society and a preacher, while at night, he plied a trade as an illicit distiller.

The first license to distill Whisky was granted to Highland Park in 1826, with Robert Borwick overseeing the production. The Borwick family maintained control of the site until 1895, when James Grant, the owner of Glenlivet Distillery, purchased it.
