Blast waves from exploded stars can accelerate cosmic ray particles to near-light-speeds, but where they come from is hard to track. Using NuSTAR mission data, astronomers found that some cosmic rays come from Eta Carinae, a luminous and massive stellar system about 7,500 light-years away. Two decades of Chandra X-ray Observatory data in 18 seconds! In the 1840s Eta Carinae, a famous star system, experienced a huge explosion and ejected between 10 and 45 times the mass of the Sun. This new time-lapse sequence contains frames of Eta Carinae taken with Chandra from 1999, 2003, 2009, 2014, and 2020 as the stellar eruption from about 180 years ago continues to expand into space at speeds up to 4.5 million miles per hour. Zoom into The Eta Carinae Nebula & Supergiant Star | ESO FriendsofNASA.org: This animation zooms in on the massive star Eta Carinae in the European Southern Observatory/WFI image of the Eta Carinae Nebula. The Eta Carinae Nebula is located in the Carina–Sagittarius Arm of the Milky Way galaxy, approximately 8,500 light-years from Earth. Within the Carina Nebula is the supergiant star Eta Carinae. It has a mass about 100 times greater than our Sun. It is an excellent candidate for a future supern

Eta Carinae: 2D Images to 3D Models of Massive Star Eruption | STScI FriendsofNASA.org: This visualization showcases the multiwavelength emissions and three-dimensional structures surrounding Eta Carinae, one of the most massive and eruptive stars in our galaxy. Two of NASA’s Great Observatories, the Hubble Space Telescope and the Chandra X-ray Observatory, have observed Eta Carinae using visible, ultraviolet, and x-ray light, as well as in the Hydrogen Alpha emission line. Eta Carinae, the most luminous and massive stellar system within 10,000 light-years of Earth, is known for its surprising behavior, erupting twice in the 19th century for reasons scientists still don't understand. New findings include Hubble Space Telescope images and new 3-D models reveal never-before-seen features of the stars' interactions. Ever wonder how Eta Carinae got its unusual shape? This animation shows how it may have started—as a triple-star system—before one of the stars bulks up by taking most of the material from one of its siblings. The stars start to trade places and when two merge an explosion of epic proportions produces bipolar ejections from the giant star. The surviving companion star settled into an elongated orbit around the merged pair, passing through the monster star's outer gaseous layers every 5.5 years.

The binary star, Eta Carinae, is the most luminous and massive system within 10,000 light-years of Earth. Here, a supercomputer simulation shows the interaction of gas outflows between the two stars. Lighter colors indicate higher gas densities. Learn more: go.nasa.gov/3PFLwVp | NASA Ames Research Center
