When and How to Prune Hydrangeas for Reliable Blooms - Garden Design

This is called "rejuvenation" pruning. The best time to do this is right after they bloom. In my area that's now (yes, I'm wearing a light down coat...it's New England). New growth should start to form within a few weeks. I did this last August to a couple of mine - not the ideal time but hey, it happens! They are coming back strong right now, with tons of new beautiful growth. I expect a few buds by the end of the season and flowers next year. Some buds are starting to form. This works for azal

A few points here to summarize: it’s good to back to something when you’re pruning—a set of leaves or buds, another branch—unless it’s something like a yew, boxwood or holly that creates growth all along the branches and then it doesn’t really matter. Going back to some new growth and leaving a stub could be fine if there was light down in there and there was a place for the new growth to go but some of it would likely grow toward the driveway, which is undesirable. Pruning this into a tree form
