Did you know that Los Angeles founded by 44 Afro Mexicans? Almost all from what is now northern Mexico, mainly the provinces of Sonora and Sinaloa in New Spain with a couple of them from Jalisco. They weren’t called Mexican until they gained their independence from Spanish rule in 1821. Under the cast system they were classified as español , mestizo , mulato , or indio. 26 of them had African Ancestry…the origins of Afro Latino Los Angeles .
