When an eagle puts the landing gear down, there is a very good chance it has located a viable food source and made the decision to snatch it from the water's surface. Watch how this young bird's entire body compresses right before it grabs the fish. Incredible animals! | Mark Smith Photography

Yesterday I posted a bald eagle with a massive floppy dangler that got carried away with a talon through the eye. That was the “see no evil” edition. This bird has an even larger floppy dangler and has clamped its mouth shut. This is the “speak no evil” edition. | Mark Smith Photography

It’s always interesting when you realize the eagle that you’ve been watching successfully hunt has just one eye. Flying out of the sky and snatching a fish from the surface is already an incredible feat on its own, but to accomplish this with just one eye? Unreal. | Mark Smith Photography

Like a pro, this eagle makes the perfect landing. Here’s the thing. That runway consist of hundreds of oysters. They aren’t exactly soft. I have been cut from just simply holding an oyster in hand. I couldn’t imagine standing on them barefoot. | Mark Smith Photography

Did This Eagle Just Grab Lettuce With His Fish?Being the apex predator around here definitely comes with perks. You don’t need to rush. You don’t need to chase. You just glide in like you own the place (because you do) and pluck a tasty little morsel right off the buffet table. And if you’re a health-conscious eagle? You snatch a side of sea lettuce to go with your plainfin midshipman. Garnish? Salad? A splash of color for the aspiring artist in us all? Who knows, but it ties the scene together n

From a distance I watched an eagle frantically attacking a tree branch. What the hell was going on I thought. As we got closer, I peered through my zoom lens and the misty rain. Was the bird stuck?? “Sam! Get closer I yelled.” Sam eased the boat in gear and we crept in. How in the world??? The odds of this bird placing one perfect sized talon in the space between those two branches must have been astronomical but there it was and it was definitely stuck. I looked back at Sam and said, “It’s stuc

For their size, 2.3 meters or 7.5 feet in wingspan, eagles still manage to fly with the utmost grace. Their abilities baffle me. Being able to photograph and film them gets me closer to their experience, but I still can’t fathom how they do what they do.As this majestic bird makes its exit, its primary feathers ever so slightly slap the surface of the water with each wingbeat. The grace continues as this winged beauty decides to devour its catch while flying straight toward me. Talk about fast fo

On a scale of 1-10, 10 being perfect, I have to award this eagle with a 12. 😃 If you ever wanted to see a perfect example of an eagle’s ability to fly, grab a fish and eat it in mid air, I think this is it. What would you give this eagle on a scale of 1-10? | Mark Smith Photography

This is one of my favorite eagle videos. It really puts so much in perspective. First, you get to see just large or wide an eagle’s wingspan is. Second, somehow I managed to keep the bird in the frame even when it went behind the boat. Third, the boat is my fav driven by my good friend Sam from Nanook Lodge and finally my good friends artist geoffry smith and Neil got a front row seat to this close flyby. | Mark Smith Photography

Eagles in the rain??? Yes! I’ll be there every single time. In fact, it’s raining now, and I’m about to head out the door to photograph some beautiful, soaking-wet birds. I have a new rain jacket to test out. Wish me luck and have a great day wherever you are on this crazy blue ball called Earth. | Mark Smith Photography

Mainly to lower my expectations, or better yet, remove them altogether. You can carry all the knowledge of past experiences in your mind, but you’ll never truly know what’s waiting for you out there. This eagle video is a perfect example. Must SEE! Confident Eagle Drops Slippery Fish Eagles might be masters of their domain but they too have stories of the one that got away. I can hear jt now. Ernie the Eagle, “You should have seen it. It was THIS big!!” Holds wings open wide. Emily the Eagle: “Oh yeah? You should’ve been here yesterday. We stuffed our crops in ten minutes flat.” Bob the Hake fish, “What the heck just happened??” | Mark Smith Photography

Did this eagle just clean its talons before a meal?!It’s always a good idea to wash your hands before having a tasty snack. It doesn’t matter if you are chowing on purple popcorn or a hearty, handsome hake fish. This eagle knows the importance of good, clean hygiene so it dips its knuckles and talons in a nice bath of ice cold saltwater before grabbing its delicacy from the all you can eat, hake buffet. | Mark Smith Photography

Even eagles have to hit the brakes every once in a while. No drive thru windows for them, just a plunge into cold salt water for a bite sized snack. And when that snack is a small hake fish? It’s a repeat trip. Think chicken strips. How many can you eat in one sitting? | Mark Smith Photography

Crows and eagles, enemies right? Not today. I think something entirely different is happening here. The crow sat on its oyster perch cawing loudly to the eagle. “Hey big dummy! Over here! Yes you with the impressive wingspan and zero clue! There’s a giant fish right in front of you. Do you have rocks for brains?Caw caw CAW.”Eagle, “What’s that small black bird? I can’t quite hear you over the sound my magnificent beauty. I’m bathing in it right now. Can’t you see this?”Crow, “Yes. You are beautif

Part 2 to yesterday’s eagle attack where the eagle landed on another bird’s back. It was definitely intentional. The attacking bird was trying to knock another bird off of a fish and realized it had made a big mistake so it quickly made an exit. The eagle that held its ground, look at that stare at the end. It meant business and if the other bird had stuck around, I don’t think things would have ended well for it. | Mark Smith Photography

Craziest Eagle Fight I’ve Seen Yet - Two Birds At Each Other’s Throats I’ve seen a lot of aerial eagle battles but seeing this go talon to talon while they are on the ground is a different story. These two are literally at each other’s throats but there can only be one winner! Love the look on the remaking bird’s face. Not going to give up to its attacker. | Mark Smith Photography

It was once said, “Press record and the eagles will fly…” I wish it were that easy. It’s not. But every once in a while, the stars align. The tide rolls in just right, the light softens, you’ve got space on the cards, your batteries are charged, and then, out of nowhere, an eagle appears and performs. They really do make it look easy! | Mark Smith Photography

What happens when a young bald eagle tries to steal a snack from an adult bald eagle? You get an amazing tangle of talons and feathers and a beautiful aerial display just like this. Some of the young birds are very aggressive. They have to be in order to survive. Food isn’t always easy to come by and many times, stealing it from the talons of another is much easier than trying to catch your own. Sounds an awful lot like politics… | Mark Smith Photography

Now this is how you make an entrance! Seeing the full wingspan of an eagle never really gets old does it? Slowing things down and filming them in slow motion just makes the entire experience even better. From the graceful midair bank, to the delicate landing on a bed of razor sharp oysters. It’s easy to see why these birds rule the skies. | Mark Smith Photography

Even the Eagle Seemed Shocked by What It TookI sat quietly for a few days in a light, misty rain, waiting for the wind to subtly shift and steer an eagle or two in my direction. On day three, that’s exactly what happened. As this bird approached, I thought it was coming in for a graceful landing among the oysters, but this eagle had other plans.A large plainfin midshipman was tucked neatly beneath a small bed of sea lettuce, a delicacy wrapped in vibrant, semi-translucent green. The fish was likel
