Opened in 1929 as Valley View Sanatorium on the border of Haledon and Wayne, New Jersey, the facility served as an isolation hospital for patients with tuberculosis and other respiratory illnesses. As TB cases declined in the 1950s, it evolved into Preakness Hospital, handling chronic ailments. Later, it operated as the Preakness Healthcare Center until its closure in 2009, serving long-term medical and nursing-care patients. Leisenring as "Berks County Cold Springs," was a prominent 19th-century health resort on South Mountain.
