Henry ‘Crip’ Heard was a professional dance BEFORE he became a double amputee. The earliest videos of the dance known as the ‘Crip Walk’ are from Henry Heard. Heard was born in Cuba in 1923 and migrated to New York with his family a few years later. He became a professional dancer at around age 13. He was a Harlem dance legend. He lost his right arm and right leg in an automobile and train accident in Memphis, Tennessee in either 1938 or 1941 (I’ve seen both accounts).
